Mac Spoken Content stops reading? How to fix it
Speak Selection starts, reads a few words, then goes silent, or it worked yesterday and doesn't today. This page is about the speech settings and the speech service itself going quiet.
Updated 23 October 2026.
Short answerOpen System Settings → Accessibility → Read & Speak (Spoken Content on macOS 14 and 15) and click Play Sample next to System voice. If the sample is silent or cuts out, pick a different voice or download it again, then turn Speak selection off and on. If the sample plays but reading still stops, turn off VoiceOver and Speak items under the pointer if you don't use them, and restart the speech service by quitting com.apple.speech.speechsynthesisd in Activity Monitor (or restart your Mac). If the built-in tools keep cutting out on long documents, Aloud reads in its own window and resumes from the last sentence.
The free built-in fix
- Test the voice with Play Sample. In System Settings → Accessibility → Read & Speak (called Spoken Content on macOS 14 and 15), click Play Sample. Silence or a clipped sample points to the voice, not the app you're reading from.
- Switch voices, then switch back. Pick another System voice such as Samantha, play the sample, then switch back. Users report this often unsticks speech without a restart.
- Re-download the voice. System voice → Manage Voices: remove the voice and download it again. Apple says a voice can't be used until its download is complete.
- Toggle Speak selection. Turn Speak selection off and on, especially after a macOS update.
- Turn off features you don't use. VoiceOver (Command-F5), Speak items under the pointer and Speak announcements can also talk, and starting one can interrupt what you were listening to.
- Restart the speech service. Open Activity Monitor, search for "speech", select com.apple.speech.speechsynthesisd (and SpeechSynthesisServer if listed), click the Stop (X) button and choose Quit. macOS starts it again the next time you use speech. This is a common user fix, not an Apple-documented step; a restart does the same thing.
- Restart the Mac. If nothing else works, restart and test with Edit → Speech → Start Speaking in TextEdit.
When it's the app, not macOS
If Play Sample works and Edit → Speech → Start Speaking works in TextEdit, Spoken Content is fine. If the shortcut does nothing at all, see Speak Selection not working. If it reliably stops partway through long text in one app, see Mac text to speech stops mid-sentence. To stop or pause reading on purpose, see how to stop your Mac reading out loud.
The better fix: Aloud
If the built-in tools keep getting in your way, Aloud (ours, $19 once per Mac, macOS 14 or later) is made for this:
- Select text in any app and press Control-Option-S (or right-click → Services → Read with Aloud).
- A reading window with word highlight and click-to-seek, and resume from the last sentence, so a cut-off doesn't lose your place.
- Control-Option-P pauses or resumes instead of starting over.
- Reads PDFs, screenshots and browser articles (Safari, Chrome, Edge and Brave), not just selections.
- Natural voices: your Mac's Enhanced and Premium voices, the on-device Kokoro neural voice (Apple silicon, macOS 15+), or ElevenLabs/Cartesia with your own API key.

Questions
Why does Spoken Content read a few words and stop?
Often the system voice didn't download fully, or another speech feature like VoiceOver took over. Re-download the voice and turn off features you don't use.
How do I restart text to speech without restarting my Mac?
In Activity Monitor, search for speech and quit com.apple.speech.speechsynthesisd. macOS restarts it when you next use speech.
Why did Spoken Content stop working after a macOS update?
The setting can get stuck. Toggle Speak selection, switch the system voice and back, and restart.
How do I test whether Spoken Content works?
Click Play Sample next to System voice, then try Edit → Speech → Start Speaking in TextEdit.
Is Aloud free?
No. Aloud is $19 once per Mac, 3-day free trial, no account.
