Text to speech for Mac without a subscription: one-time purchase options

Yes. Aloud is $19 once per Mac, with a 3-day free trial. Other one-time options include Murmur ($49, a voice studio) and Vocaldi (dictation and read-aloud). Speak Selection and MoxSpeak cost nothing.

Subscription vs one-time

A subscription usually pays for cloud voices, which cost the company per character, plus sync across devices. A one-time app runs voices on your Mac, so there is no server bill to pass on. You give up cross-device sync and, usually, cloud voices.

Built-in and no-cost options

Speak Selection is part of macOS (set it up). MoxSpeak reads selected text with Kokoro at no charge (Aloud vs MoxSpeak).

What you give up

Mostly cloud voices. Aloud keeps that option: bring your own ElevenLabs or Cartesia key and pay the provider only for what you read. See using your own key, and built-in vs paid for the broader picture.
