Offline, private text to speech on Mac: voices that never upload your text

Yes, a Mac can read text aloud with no connection. Apple Enhanced and Premium voices run on the Mac, and so does Kokoro in Aloud. With those voices, Aloud sends nothing over the network.

Updated 14 October 2026.

What on-device means

An on-device voice turns text into speech on your Mac's own chip. Nothing is uploaded, so it works on a plane and suits confidential documents. Cloud voices send your text to a server.

Offline voice options

  • Apple Enhanced and Premium voices, included with macOS, downloaded once.
  • Kokoro, a neural voice, in Aloud on Apple silicon with macOS 15 (327 MB, downloaded once). See Kokoro on Mac.

How to download the best Apple voices

  1. System Settings → Accessibility → Read & Speak (Spoken Content on macOS 14 and 15).
  2. Open the System voice menu and choose Manage Voices.
  3. Download a voice marked Premium or Enhanced.

Using Aloud fully offline

Aloud has no account, and the app has no analytics or telemetry. Text recognition for screenshots and scans runs on the Mac. It goes online only to activate a license, check for updates and download the Kokoro voice. Cloud voices are off by default and used only if you turn them on with your own key.

When cloud voices are worth it

For the most expressive narration of non-sensitive text, ElevenLabs or Cartesia voices may be worth the per-character cost. See using your own ElevenLabs key.
