Mac text to speech stops mid-sentence or partway through? Fixes
Speak Selection starts fine, then stops after a paragraph, or partway through a sentence. These are the usual causes.
Updated 22 October 2026.
Short answerThe common causes are: you clicked elsewhere or pressed the shortcut again (it toggles), your Mac or display went to sleep, your audio output changed (for example AirPods disconnecting), the app only passed part of the text, or the voice download is incomplete. Keep the selection, use the Speak Selection controller to pause instead of clicking away, re-download the voice, and keep the Mac awake for long reads. For long documents, Aloud reads in its own window and resumes from the last sentence.
The free built-in fix
- Don't click away while it reads. Clicking or pressing Option-Esc again can stop speech. Turn on Show controller (the (i) button next to Speak selection) and use its pause button.
- Keep the Mac awake. For long reads, set the display to stay on longer in System Settings → Lock Screen, or run caffeinate in Terminal while it reads.
- Check the audio output. If Bluetooth headphones drop, speech can stop. Pick the output again in Control Center → Sound.
- Re-download the voice. In Manage Voices, remove and download the voice again. A broken download can cut out.
- Read long text from a file. For very long text, save it as a .txt file and run say -f file.txt in Terminal, or use an app made for long reading.
Apps that only pass part of the text
Some apps, especially web apps that draw their own text, give macOS only what's visible on screen. Speak Selection then stops at the edge of the visible area. Scrolling and reselecting, or using Reader in Safari, usually helps.
The better fix: Aloud
If the built-in tools keep getting in your way, Aloud (ours, $19 once per Mac, macOS 14 or later) is made for this:
- Reads whole documents in its own window: PDFs (skipping headers, footers and page numbers), articles and plain-text files, so it doesn't depend on another app keeping a selection.
- Resume from the last sentence, a sleep timer, and click-to-seek on any word.
- Speed from 0.75x to 2x, changed mid-sentence, and resume from the last sentence.
- Natural voices: your Mac's Enhanced and Premium voices, the on-device Kokoro neural voice (Apple silicon, macOS 15+), or ElevenLabs/Cartesia with your own API key.

Questions
Why does Speak Selection stop reading on my Mac?
Usually the selection was lost, the shortcut was pressed again, the Mac slept, or the audio output changed. Use the controller to pause instead of clicking away.
How do I make my Mac read a long document without stopping?
Keep the Mac awake, use the controller, or read from a file with say -f. Aloud reads long PDFs and articles in its own window and resumes where you stopped.
Does Speak Selection have a length limit?
Apple doesn't publish one, but some apps pass only the visible text, which can make it stop early.
Can Aloud continue where it left off?
Yes, Aloud resumes from the last sentence.
