Mac Speak Selection not working? How to fix Option-Esc
You select text, press Option-Esc, and nothing happens, or you just hear a beep. Here are the fixes that work, in the order to try them.
Updated 22 October 2026.
Short answerOpen System Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content (Read & Speak on newer macOS) and make sure Speak selection is on. If it is, turn it off and on again, check that the app you're in isn't using Option-Esc itself, and set a different shortcut with the (i) button. A beep means macOS found no text to speak: select the text first. If none of that helps, Aloud reads selected text with its own shortcut, Control-Option-S.
The free built-in fix
- Check Speak selection is on. System Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content (or Read & Speak) → turn on Speak selection.
- Toggle it off and on. Many people on Apple Community fix a dead shortcut simply by switching Speak selection off and back on, or after a restart.
- Select the text first. If nothing is selected, macOS tries to read the window and plays a beep when it finds nothing. Highlight the text, then press Option-Esc.
- Change the shortcut. Click (i) next to Speak selection, click the Keyboard shortcut field and press a new combination, such as Option-Tab.
- Check for a conflicting app. Some apps take Option-Esc for themselves (ONLYOFFICE, some games and remote-desktop tools). Try in TextEdit: if it works there, the other app is the problem.
- Check the voice and volume. In System voice, make sure a voice is downloaded, click Play Sample, and check your sound output (AirPods may have disconnected).
Still silent? Try Edit → Speech
Most Mac apps (TextEdit, Safari, Mail, Notes, Pages) have Edit → Speech → Start Speaking. If that works but Option-Esc doesn't, the problem is the shortcut, not speech itself. In apps that draw their own text, like some web apps and Electron apps, macOS can't see the selection at all.
The better fix: Aloud
If the built-in tools keep getting in your way, Aloud (ours, $19 once per Mac, macOS 14 or later) is made for this:
- Select text in any app and press Control-Option-S (or right-click → Services → Read with Aloud).
- A reading window with a word highlight and click-to-seek, so you can jump to any sentence.
- Speed from 0.75x to 2x, changed mid-sentence, and resume from the last sentence.
- Natural voices: your Mac's Enhanced and Premium voices, the on-device Kokoro neural voice (Apple silicon, macOS 15+), or ElevenLabs/Cartesia with your own API key.
- Private by default: with Apple or Kokoro voices nothing leaves your Mac; no account, no analytics in the app.
- Control-Option-O to drag a box around text an app won't let you select, and Aloud reads it with on-device text recognition.

Questions
Why does my Mac beep when I press Option-Esc?
macOS couldn't find any text to speak. Select the text first. In apps that draw their own text, the selection may not be visible to macOS.
Where is Speak Selection on macOS Sequoia or newer?
System Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content on macOS 14 and 15; newer versions call the pane Read & Speak.
Can I change the Speak Selection shortcut?
Yes. Click the (i) button next to Speak selection and press a new key combination in the Keyboard shortcut field.
Is there an alternative if Speak Selection keeps failing?
Edit → Speech → Start Speaking works in many apps. Aloud ($19 once, 3-day free trial) reads selected text with Control-Option-S and can read text from the screen with Control-Option-O.
