- You want to hear text right where it is, in Mail, Preview, Notes or a browser, without importing it
- You care that your documents stay on your Mac
- You want an audio file you can keep and play anywhere
Pick Speechify if
- You listen mostly on your phone, or across phone, tablet and computer
- You want one synced library with notes and AI summaries
- You want Speechify's specific voices, including celebrity voices
- You scan paper books with a phone camera
Where Speechify is better
- Phones. Speechify's iPhone and Android apps are the core of the product. Aloud has no phone app.
- Voice choice. Speechify offers far more cloud voices and languages than Aloud's on-device voices. Aloud can use ElevenLabs or Cartesia voices only if you bring your own API key.
- Sync and study tools. A cross-device library, notes, summaries and quizzes are not things Aloud does.
Where Aloud is better
- Cost over time. $19 once versus $139 a year. Over three years that is $19 against $417.
- No account and no meter. Apple and Kokoro voices run on your Mac, so there is no word allowance to run out of.
- It works where the text already is. Select text in any app and press ⌃⌥S, or use the right-click Services menu. A reader opens with the current word highlighted.
- Mac-native details. A player in the notch or a floating reader, a Control Center control, Shortcuts and Siri actions, a sleep timer and a pronunciation list.
Switching from Speechify
- Install Aloud and open it once. The 3-day trial starts then; nothing to sign up for.
- Download a better system voice: System Settings → Accessibility → Read & Speak (Spoken Content on macOS 14 and 15) → System voice → Manage Voices, and pick an Enhanced or Premium voice. On Apple silicon with macOS 15 or later you can also download the Kokoro voice inside Aloud.
- Select text anywhere and press ⌃⌥S, or open a PDF with File → Open PDF or Image….
- If you keep a Speechify subscription you no longer need, cancel it through the store or site where you bought it.
Questions
Is Aloud a good Speechify alternative on Mac?
For listening on a Mac, yes: Aloud reads selected text, PDFs, screenshots and web articles with a word highlight, for $19 once and without an account. It is not a replacement if you need Speechify's phone apps, synced library or cloud voices.
How much does Speechify cost compared with Aloud?
Speechify Premium is listed at $139 a year or $29 a month on speechify.com (checked 8 October 2026). Aloud is $19 once per Mac, with a 3-day trial that needs no card.
Does Aloud sound as good as Speechify?
Speechify's paid voices are cloud neural voices. Aloud uses Apple's Enhanced and Premium voices and the Kokoro neural voice on your Mac; many people find Kokoro and Apple's Premium voices natural, but the cloud voices offer more variety. With your own ElevenLabs or Cartesia key, Aloud can use those cloud voices too.
Does Aloud have a word limit?
No. Apple and Kokoro voices run on your Mac with no allowance. If you use your own ElevenLabs or Cartesia key, that provider bills you for what you use.
Does Aloud work on iPhone or Windows?
No. Aloud is a Mac app for macOS 14 Sonoma or later.
