Speak Selection slow to start on Mac? What to try
You press Option-Esc and wait a few seconds before anything happens. Apple doesn't document a cause, but these general steps help many people.
Updated 22 October 2026.
Short answerApple hasn't published a cause for the lag, so treat these as things to try: in System Settings → Accessibility → Read & Speak (Spoken Content on macOS 14 and 15), toggle Speak selection off and on, switch to a different System voice and back, restart, and install macOS updates. Very long selections may also take longer to start. Aloud is an alternative path with its own player.
The free built-in fix
- Toggle Speak selection. Turn it off and on.
- Switch voices. Choose a different System voice, test, then switch back.
- Try a shorter selection. Select a paragraph instead of the whole page.
- Restart and update. Restart, then check Software Update.
The better fix: Aloud
If the built-in tools keep getting in your way, Aloud (ours, $19 once per Mac, macOS 14 or later) is made for this:
- Select text in any app and press Control-Option-S (or right-click → Services → Read with Aloud).
- A reading window with a word highlight and click-to-seek, so you can jump to any sentence.
- Speed from 0.75x to 2x, changed mid-sentence, and resume from the last sentence.
