Siri or Premium voice not downloading on Mac? What to try

You picked a nicer voice, the download stalls, and your Mac keeps reading in the robotic one. These are the steps people use to get it unstuck.

Updated 22 October 2026.

Short answerIn System Settings → Accessibility → Read & Speak (Spoken Content on macOS 14 and 15), open the System voice menu → Manage Voices and start the download again; Apple says a voice can't be used until its download completes. Check free disk space and your network, restart, and install macOS updates. Some users report that turning Siri on helped Siri voices download; that's a user report, not Apple guidance. Aloud can also use its own on-device Kokoro voice if Apple's download keeps failing.

The free built-in fix

  1. Retry the download. System voice → Manage Voices, select the voice and let it finish. Keep the Mac awake until it's done.
  2. Check space and network. Voices are large downloads. Free some disk space and try another network.
  3. Remove and re-add. Delete the half-downloaded voice in Manage Voices, restart, and download again.
  4. Update macOS. Install the latest macOS update in System Settings → General → Software Update.
  5. Optional: turn on Siri. Some users report Siri voices only downloaded after enabling Siri in System Settings → Siri. Try it if nothing else works.

The better fix: Aloud

If the built-in tools keep getting in your way, Aloud (ours, $19 once per Mac, macOS 14 or later) is made for this:

  • Kokoro: a natural neural voice Aloud runs on your Mac, a one-time 327 MB download with eight English voices (Apple silicon, macOS 15 or later).
  • Any Apple voice already installed, including Enhanced and Premium.
  • Select text in any app and press Control-Option-S (or right-click → Services → Read with Aloud).

Questions

Why does my Mac keep using the robotic voice?

The voice you picked hasn't finished downloading, so macOS falls back. Retry in Manage Voices.

Can I use a voice before it finishes downloading?

No. Apple says voices aren't available until the download is complete.

Does turning on Siri help?

Some users report it helped Siri voices download. Apple doesn't document this.

Is there another natural offline voice?

Aloud's Kokoro voice runs on your Mac after a one-time download. Aloud is $19 once per Mac, 3-day free trial, no account.
