How to read a Notion page aloud on Mac

Notion doesn't have a read-aloud button, but your Mac can read any Notion page you can select.

Updated 22 October 2026.

Short answerTurn on Speak selection, expand any toggles, select the text in Notion and press Option-Esc. Databases and embeds read poorly, so select the text blocks. If Option-Esc does nothing, copy into TextEdit and use Edit → Speech → Start Speaking. Aloud reads a selection with Control-Option-S, with highlighting, speeds up to 2x and .m4a export.

The free built-in fix

  1. Turn on Speak selection. System Settings → Accessibility → Read & Speak (called Spoken Content on macOS 14 and 15) → Speak selection.
  2. Expand toggles. Open collapsed toggles so their text can be selected.
  3. Select and speak. Select the text and press Option-Esc.
  4. Fallback. Copy into TextEdit and use Edit → Speech → Start Speaking.

The better fix: Aloud

If the built-in tools keep getting in your way, Aloud (ours, $19 once per Mac, macOS 14 or later) is made for this:

  • Select text in any app and press Control-Option-S (or right-click → Services → Read with Aloud).
  • A reading window with a word highlight and click-to-seek, so you can jump to any sentence.
  • Speed from 0.75x to 2x, changed mid-sentence, and resume from the last sentence.
  • .m4a export to listen away from your desk.
