ChatGPT Read Aloud missing on Mac? How to listen to answers

Users report the Read Aloud option is missing in the redesigned ChatGPT app for Mac. You can still have any answer read to you.

Updated 22 October 2026.

Short answerUsers on Reddit report the per-message Read Aloud option isn't in the new ChatGPT Mac app; OpenAI says the previous app, now ChatGPT Classic, can still be used. On any Mac, select the answer and press Option-Esc with Speak selection on, or copy it into TextEdit and choose Edit → Speech → Start Speaking. Aloud reads any selection with Control-Option-S, or text on screen with Control-Option-O.

The free built-in fix

  1. Turn on Speak selection. System Settings → Accessibility → Read & Speak (called Spoken Content on macOS 14 and 15) → Speak selection.
  2. Select the answer. Select the text of the reply.
  3. Press Option-Esc. Press it again to stop.
  4. If nothing happens. Copy the answer into TextEdit and choose Edit → Speech → Start Speaking.

The better fix: Aloud

If the built-in tools keep getting in your way, Aloud (ours, $19 once per Mac, macOS 14 or later) is made for this:

  • Select text in any app and press Control-Option-S (or right-click → Services → Read with Aloud).
  • Control-Option-O reads text on screen when an app won't pass the selection.
  • A reading window with a word highlight and click-to-seek, so you can jump to any sentence.
  • Speed from 0.75x to 2x, changed mid-sentence, and resume from the last sentence.
  • .m4a export to save a long answer as audio.
