Mac text to speech sounds robotic? How to get a natural voice

If Spoken Content sounds flat and robotic, it's almost always because you're on a compact default voice. The fix is free and takes two minutes.

Updated 22 October 2026.

Short answerOpen System Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content (Read & Speak on newer macOS), click the System voice menu, choose Manage Voices, and download a voice marked Premium or Enhanced (or pick a Siri voice). Then select it. That alone makes a big difference. For a neural voice that sounds closer to a person, Aloud runs the Kokoro voice on your Mac.

The free built-in fix

  1. Open the voice settings. System Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content (or Read & Speak).
  2. Open Manage Voices. Click the System voice menu and choose Manage Voices.
  3. Download a Premium or Enhanced voice. Find your language and download a voice marked Premium or Enhanced. They are larger downloads.
  4. Select it and test. Pick the new voice as the System voice and click Play Sample.
  5. Adjust the rate. Very fast or very slow rates sound more robotic. Start near the middle of the Speaking rate slider.

Why the default sounds robotic

Compact voices are small so they install quickly. Premium and Enhanced voices are larger and much smoother over long text. Siri voices can be used by Speak Selection but are generally not available to other apps. Long reading sessions also expose odd pauses at line breaks, URLs and footnote numbers, which make any voice sound mechanical.

The better fix: Aloud

If the built-in tools keep getting in your way, Aloud (ours, $19 once per Mac, macOS 14 or later) is made for this:

  • Kokoro, a neural voice that runs on your Mac: a one-time 327 MB download with eight English voices (Apple silicon, macOS 15 or later). No cloud, no subscription.
  • Your Premium and Enhanced Apple voices work too.
  • Optional ElevenLabs or Cartesia voices with your own API key, billed by that provider.
  • Cleaner input: Aloud skips URLs, citation markers and footnote marks, and rejoins hyphenated line breaks in PDFs, so the voice doesn't stumble.
  • A pronunciation list for names and jargon.

Questions

How do I make my Mac's voice sound less robotic?

Download a Premium or Enhanced voice in System Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → System voice → Manage Voices, and select it.

What is the most natural voice on a Mac?

Among built-in voices, Premium voices and Siri voices sound most natural. Neural voices such as Kokoro, which Aloud runs on device, go further.

Are Premium voices free?

Yes. They're free downloads from Apple and work offline.

Does Aloud need the internet for natural voices?

No. The Kokoro voice runs on your Mac after a one-time download. Only ElevenLabs or Cartesia voices, if you choose them, use the internet.
