Edge Read Aloud not working on Mac? Fixes and alternatives

Edge's Read Aloud button stops working or the voices never load. Here's what to try, and the free fallback built into macOS.

Updated 22 October 2026.

Short answerUpdate and restart Edge, then open Read Aloud's Voice options and try a different voice. Users report the online Natural voices sometimes hang while loading, so try another network too. If it still fails, select the text and press Option-Esc with macOS Speak selection on. Aloud reads the front Edge tab's article with Control-Option-A using on-device voices, so it doesn't depend on an online voice service.

The free built-in fix

  1. Update and restart Edge. Edge menu → Help and feedback → About Microsoft Edge, then relaunch.
  2. Change the voice. In Read Aloud, open Voice options and pick another voice.
  3. Try another network. Online voices can stall on a slow or filtered network.
  4. Fallback: Speak Selection. Turn on Speak selection in System Settings → Accessibility → Read & Speak (called Spoken Content on macOS 14 and 15), select text, press Option-Esc.

The better fix: Aloud

If the built-in tools keep getting in your way, Aloud (ours, $19 once per Mac, macOS 14 or later) is made for this:

  • Control-Option-A reads the front tab's article in Edge, Safari, Chrome or Brave, without menus and ads.
  • On-device voices (Apple or Kokoro) work offline.
  • A reading window with a word highlight and click-to-seek, so you can jump to any sentence.
  • Speed from 0.75x to 2x, changed mid-sentence, and resume from the last sentence.
